Three Chanute High School students attended the Kansas Journalism Institute this summer, gaining valuable knowledge and experience.

Juniors Danae Decker and Tara Guinotte and sophomore Taylor Catterson-Williams took part in the week-long camp beginning June 23 on the campus of the University of Kansas.

“It was a great opportunity for the three of them, and I’m really excited about the ideas and skills they received at KJI,” The Comet adviser Dustin Fox said.

Decker and Guinotte took part in the Newspaper Seminar section, meeting with students from a host of other schools to share ideas as well as offer and receive critiques for their school’s newspaper.

“I loved the opportunity of trying something new,” Decker said. “ It allowed me to open up my eyes to see new and fresh ideas from other schools’ publications.”

Guinotte enjoyed her time there as well.

“It was fun and a good learning experience,” Guinotte added. “My favorite part was being treated like a college student and being able to meet a lot of different people. I definitely learned a lot from the trip, and it was worth going.”

Catterson-Williams took part in the Digital Photography section of the camp.

“All three of them received wonderful reviews from their camp counselors, and I look forward to having them put what they learned to use this year,” Fox said.
