Surprise yourself, try something new

High school is a time for discovery. Discovering what you like, what you are good at, and what you want to do with the rest of your life.

Going into high school you may think you know what you are good at and what you like to do best, so you never try anything new. As a result, you miss out on all the things you could have been great at.

In the four glorious years that I have attended Chanute High School I’ve tried just about everything that is offered, from cheerleading to vocal, to Kansas Future Educators of America to drama club, to debate. Even though not all of these were my natural calling, I had an amazing time trying something new.

Along the way I learned some valuable lessons — like always bring extra socks to a cross country meet or that there is nothing better than making a judge laugh during a humorous solo at a forensics tournament. In life, and especially in high school, it is good to take risks and try something new.

You may never picture yourself having fun on a history club trip or helping out backstage for the school play, but that’s the great thing about taking chances, you never know what will happen or who you will meet along the way.

So go out and join the chess team or FCCLA and maybe even the golf team; there isn’t much you have to lose. If nothing else, you’ll have some memories from the “best years of your life”, high school.
