Making good progress on the fall musical “The Drowsy Chaperone,” the cast has been busy rehearsing in preparation for their performances on November 11 and 12.
According to director David Cadwallader, the play has a way of making fun of different elements in musical history.
The Man in the Chair is sharing with the audience his favorite fictitious musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” by giving interesting backgrounds on the characters in a witty manner.
Both the cast members and the directors believe they have the talent to pull off a great musical for the school and community.
“We have the talent to be a really impressive show,” Cadwallader said. “Rarely do we have a cast that we could pick any member from the chorus and put them in a lead role, but we’ve got it.”
By being on the right track with rehearsals, the cast members have been able to develop their characters at a fast pace.
“Everyone’s getting their lines down really well and characters are coming out fast so I’m excited for it,” senior Jefferson Holmes, who plays Robert Martin, said.
Cadwallader said they wanted to do a more contemporary show than what has been done in the past, so the comedic aspect of the play was how it got chosen for the fall musical.
“We wanted to do a fun show. This one was silly and that appealed to us,” Cadwallader said. “We knew the students would enjoy that aspect of it.”
According senior Kenna Bideau, who plays Kitty, laughter is not the only reason people should come see the play.
“There’s a line in the play that says musicals are an escape for people,” Bideau said. “And this musical is a chance for people to get away and have a laugh.”
Even though “The Drowsy Chaperone” is not a well-known play, the cast and directors agree everyone should give it a chance by watching it.
“It’s not a well-known play which gives us more leverage to it because we won’t be compared to other versions,” senior Alex Thomen, who plays The Man in the Chair, said.
Despite the pressure of being a lead cast member, sophomore Lauren Busby, who plays Janet Van DeGraff, has enjoyed being a part of the musical.
“It’s been an amazing experience to hangout with the rest of the cast and I hope our hard work has paid off,” Busby said.
